- Indian Brook First Nation Celebrates New Wallace Hills Indian Reserve 14A - added 2011-06-19
Shubenacadie Band, Indian Brook, Nova Scotia (June 9, 2011) - Chief Jerry Sack, Shubenacadie Band (Indian Brook First Nation), was joined today by Sara Filbee, Assistant Deputy Minister, Lands and Economic Development, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, and John MacDonell, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, on behalf of the Province of Nova Scotia, at a community information session and celebration for the recently created Wallace Hills Indian Reserve 14A. The new reserve, set apart for the use and benefit of the Shubenacadie Band through the Additions to Reserve Policy of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, was created on March 10, 2011 and is located in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
"This new reserve will provide a stepping stone for our community into the urban economy and will be an entry point into the job market." said Chief Sack. "Urban reserves have a proven track record for promoting business opportunities, partnerships and creating jobs, and these things can only improve the quality of life for our members. We look forward to exploring the many possibilities that are now before us."
"The addition of this new reserve will enable the Indian Brook First Nation to improve the quality of life and self-sufficiency of community members, while contributing in a very direct way to the economic and social fabric of surrounding municipalities," said Ms. Filbee. "Wallace Hills will provide opportunities to create businesses closer to a major economic center and allow the First Nation to move toward greater self-sufficiency by being in a much better position to become involved in regional development while contributing to the overall economy."
"This land acquisition in Wallace Hills is an important opportunity for the future prosperity of the Indian Brook First Nation," said Minister MacDonell, on behalf of Premier Dexter. "Growing the economy through good jobs will help Indian Brook become stronger financially, while contributing to the overall growth of the province."
The Wallace Hills Indian Reserve 14A is 54.799 hectares (135.36 acres) of land, located in the urban area of the Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. The Shubenacadie Band has four other Indian Reserves; Indian Brook #14, which is the main reserve and is located 28.8 km SW of Truro; Shubenacadie #13 - 32 km N of Halifax; Pennal #19 - 67.2 km NW of Halifax and New Ross #20 - 64 km NW of Halifax.
